105? Really?
So this morning, the W woke up crying. When I went in to get him, he was burning up. I did a quick diaper change and decided to take his temp. I sat there and just watched the numbers climb, finally stopping at 105. So K and I packed him up and travelled to the ER bright and early this morning. It turns out he does not have an ear infection - he has a virus: the flu, adenovirus, or viral pneumonia. The treatment for all is the same: rest, push fluids, keep the fever down with a regimen of tylenol/ibuprofen every three hours. They also gave him an iv of fluids, as he was slightly dehydrated.
We got home about 8 am, everyone fell asleep, and K and I woke up at noon. W woke up at about 2 with another fever. I gave him meds, a luke-warm bath (which he handled very well), and a bottle. He went back to sleep and woke up around 8, no fever, and acting better. He still didn't want to drink anything, and kept pushing away the bottle, so I mixed the pedialyte with water, got a needleless syringe, and administered about 22 oz. of liquid. Over three hours. And I'd imagine that about 4 oz. ended up on his onsie. I was very determined.
But so far, that super high fever has not come back. Thank gods! And his appetite seemed to be returning, which is good. And I'm off this week, so I can be home with him, which is also good.

First Christmas
We are at home, safe and sound. We came back to two grumpy cats, who were alone an extra 12 hours (b/c of weather, we stayed in the QC last night and left this morning). It was the W's first Christmas, but my mom had to work on the 25th, so we did our celebrating on the 24th. The W received gifts from O, and from DC and his family, and of course, from my parents. He wasn't really sure how to open them at first - I had to help him - but by the end of the night, he was tearing off the wrapper like a little pro. He also didn't bother the nativity scene that my parents had up, which is something of a minor miracle, as it is an incredibly ornate and also large nativity, or their tiny tree, which had glass ornaments. On the 24th, we all ate dinner, talked, and watched Inglorious Bastards after the W was asleep. It was fun.
But the W seems to have a hard time sleeping at my parents. The first night, he was up about three time, and the second night, after he got up the second time, my mom just put him in bed with herself and me. And for an almost 11 month old, he is a bed hog. He shoved himself up against me, back to back, as close as he could, and then kicked my mom in the back whenever she got too close. Christmas Eve, we ended up doing the same thing - putting him in bed with us. I assumed that it was being in a new place, in a new bed, and in a colder room than what he is used to. But no. Last night he started running a fever of 103.4. I gave him ibuprofen, dressed him in lighter clothes, and rocked him back to sleep. He was up again and again. My dad came in to check on us at around 4 am (the W and I were sleeping in their recliner in the living room), and thought his temp was going down, which it should have been. Alas, it was not - it was 103.3. So my dad and I took him to the ER, where he was diagnosed with fever (duh) and an ear infection. Poor little boy! And to top it all off, he dropped his stuffed Tigger in the grocery store, and when my mom and I went to look for it (about 10 minutes later), it was gone. We checked with lost and found, but no one had turned it in. So if he were older, it would have been kind of a sucky first Christmas. Now there is nowhere to go but up!!

i don't wanna grow up
looks like s & i will be putting in an offer on the townhouse we looked at again yesterday on mormon trek. we liked it the first time we looked with the seller's agent right before thanksgiving, but it kept growing on us over the past month. s's dad came with this time to take a look at things and see if there were any major flaws, but besides a problem with the french doors to the deck, nothing seemed that bad. (looks like water got under the frame, then froze shifting the frame on one side, which makes the door seal useless) a house would be nice, but anything in our price range/preferred location would be a lot older and then you never know what problems could be lurking once you signed your life away.
dc, any advice on being a homeowner/grown-up?
i wonder what moving winter will be like? j, any comments?

This is the End
OK, this blog has become distinctly...lackluster as of late. Do we even want to keep it going? I mean, we're all on facebook, so is there really a point? Maybe we should let it go humanely. What do you say?

Walking Pneumonia
So that's my diagnosis - I have walking pneumonia. It just keeps reminding me of a walking taco. Which I've always pictured as a bag of Doritos with cartoon legs. I'm not sure how it's different from other kinds of pneumonia, except I don't have to be hospitalized, like I was the last time I had pneumonia. And so far no one has thrown me into a cool water bath, like the last time I had pneumonia. Although, in all fairness, the last time I had pneumonia, I was three, with a super high fever, and I wasn't drinking or eating. I'm not really eating now, but there's been no fever, and I'm drinking water and coffee, so it's all good.
But I'd prefer a walking taco.

The Third Annual December Event
Well, for the third year (out of five years teaching), we were dismissed early today, and do not have school tomorrow. The first year that this happened, we were supposed to have a blizzard, but it never actually arrived. K and I walked to the grocery store during that "blizzard", and it wasn't really bad out. Last year, we were dismissed early and then school was cancelled the day before Winter break, which seemed cool at the time, but actually ended up being kind of a pain in the ass when finals rolled around in early January. But now - well - I can't say I'm displeased. Does it mess up finals? Yeah, a little. But it'll all work out in the end. Plus I get to be at home with my guys and cats tomorrow - nothing tops that!
So take care, all of you, enjoy the snow, travel carefully (if you're moving around at all). Oh, and by the way - the Weather Channel was broadcasting from the DSM area today. I'm a little (absurdly) proud of this fact!
